  • Aircraft, including helicopters can become more fuel efficient by switching to diesel now that lighter diesel engines are possible | Economist.com: Their chief drawback was their weight. Both of a diesel?s big advantages on the ground?its efficiency and its torque (pulling power)?are the result of its high compression of the fuel-air mixture in its cylinders. The resulting high pressure, however, requires a big, heavy engine to contain it. That is why diesels have traditionally been used mostly in heavy machines, such as locomotives and lorries. Now the weight penalty is starting to diminish. New casting and manufacturing methods can produce lighter, stronger components. Computerised fuel-injection has improved diesels? performance, and their inherent strength means they can be turbocharged to boost power even further. As a result, many of the least thirsty cars now on the road have diesel engines. And these same advances are being exploited in a new generation of diesel engines for use in small fixed-wing aircraft.
  • Iowa State engineer develops laser technologies to analyze combustion, biofuels: It's fairly obvious when a combustor is not running well and producing a lot of soot and other pollutants,. How do you solve that problem? To do that we can open up the black box and look inside the combustion chamber itself. The tools being developed are laser-based sensors that can capture images at thousands and even millions of frames per second. Those images record all kinds of data about what's happening in the flaming mix of fuel and air. The goal is to probe this harsh environment to provide the knowledge required to reduce pollutant emissions. By selecting lasers of different wavelengths, Meyer's combustion sensors can record where pollutants such as soot, nitric oxide and carbon monoxide are being formed. The sensors can also look for unburned fuel and capture data about fuel sprays, fuel-air mixing and energy release.
  • China - Trucks - Transportation - Pollution - New York Times: Trucks Power China's Economy, at a Suffocating Cost: Trucks here burn diesel fuel contaminated with more than 130 times the pollution-caus ing sulfur that the US allows in most diesel. Tiny particles of sulfur-laden soot penetrate deep into residents? lungs, interfering with the absorption of oxygen. Nitrogen oxides from truck exhaust, which build all night because cities limit truck traffic by day, bind each morning with gasoline fumes from China?s growing car fleet to form dense smog that inflames lungs and can cause severe coughing and asthma. The 10 million trucks on Chinese roads are a major reason that China accounts for half the world?s annual increase in oil consumption and has propelled China past the United States as the world?s largest emitter of global-warming gases. The worst offenders are older trucks that are exempt from newer emission standards. Why not spend some of China's US$1.5 trillion on trucks made in the US and give the trucks away?
